Rehmannia
Rehmannia glutinosa
Overview
Rehmannia is native to China, and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years. The medicinal part of the plant is the thick orange tuberous root, which Chinese herbalists regard as having different properties depending whether it is consumed fresh, dried, or cured in a wine made from millet.
Usage
Rehmannia is traditionally used to relieve conditions associated with fever or inflammation, including arthritis, asthma and urticaria (nettle rash).
It is also regarded as a potent tonic for the adrenal glands and nervous system, and so may be especially beneficial when these and other conditions are associated with STRESS and FATIGUE.
Herbalists sometimes combine rehmannia with Licorice, which is also traditionally used as an adrenal tonic. The two herbs have some similar properties, however unlike Licorice, rehmannia is safe for use by patients who suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure).
As rehmannia is traditionally used to aid the management of haemorrhagic bleeding and for spotting between periods (metrorrhagia), the herb can also be used to support the health of the female reproductive cycle. It may be particularly useful when these symptoms are accompanied by premenstrual FATIGUE, DEPRESSION and reduced STRESS tolerance.
In such circumstances rehmannia is often taken with Withania and Rhodiola, both of which also help to raise energy levels and enhance the body's ability to cope with STRESS. In addition to its benefits for women, this trio of herbs is specifically indicated for men experiencing erectile dysfunction or libido problems (especially if accompanied by symptoms of STRESS, exhaustion or FATIGUE).
Rehmannia is also sometimes incorporated into a multi-herbal tonic that works synergistically to support the functioning of all the body organs. Other herbs that are typically included in a blend like this include remedies for the digestive system (e.g. Globe artichoke and Ginger), immune system (astragalus and echinacea), cardiovascular system (ginkgo and hawthorn), and nervous system (Siberian ginseng and Gotu kola).
