Astragalus

Astragalus membranaceous

Overview

Astragalus is considered one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese medicine, and has been used to restore IMMUNITY and promote vitality for hundreds of years.

Usage

Astragalus root is most famous for its traditional usage as an immune system tonic. It is used to re-build resistance in patients who are run-down and prone to recurrent infections (e.g. colds and flu), and is specifically indicated for chronic (i.e. long-term or persistent) infections. As it also raises vitality (in Chinese terms tonifies the Qi, or vital force), astragalus is specifically indicated when debility and FATIGUE are present, sometimes with accompanying symptoms of lack of appetite, diarrhoea or excessive sweating. It is often combined with other medicines that are traditionally regarded as immune system tonics, including echinacea, reishi and ligustrum. This combination of remedies supports IMMUNITY, aids recovery following illness, and helps restore stamina. It works by increasing the production and activity of key immune cells, and has antimicrobial properties against several viruses that cause colds, flu and other respiratory infections. Amongst other applications of astragalus, it is traditionally regarded as a cardiovascular tonic, aiding the management of HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE and supporting HEART HEALTH. Astragalus is sometimes incorporated into a multi-herbal tonic that works synergistically to support the functioning of all the body organs. Other herbs that are typically included in a blend like this include remedies for the digestive system (e.g. globe artichoke and ginger), immune system (Siberian ginseng and echinacea), cardiovascular system (ginkgo and hawthorn), and nervous system (oats and gotu kola).
